The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is currently accepting submissions for a series of design competitions called the Centennial Challenges. This series of competitions ranges from the development of a lunar lander to the development of an energy beam power distribution mechanism. All competitions are achievement based in order to generate real solutions from non-traditional sources such as industry, academia, and the public.

The Établissement Public du Palais de Justice de Paris is launching an international ideas competition for the master-planning of the new Paris Courthouse in the 13th arrondismont, neighboring Dominique Perrault’s National Library. The competition is open to architects and town planners, and to architecture students.

Stockholm Public Library International Architectural Competition

The City of Stockholm has begun a two-stage architectural design competition for the expansion of the historic Stockholm Public Library. As a symbol of the city, the Library is in need of expansion to meet the growing and changing needs of Stockholm. Designs should incorporate the original design into the expansion, thereby making the historic structure a vital component of the new building.

2007 Rome Prize

The American Academy in Rome is accepting applicants for the 2007 Rome Prize, a fellowship for emerging artists and for scholars to expand their work and knowledge through immersion in one of the great foundries of the Western humanistic tradition. The academy has always emphasized the value of a rigorous intellectual community, a tradition that continues to this day, encouraging dialogue amongst fellows as a means of education. Of the 30 fellowships, 15 each for artists and scholars, 2 to 3 go to architects each year, including past recipients Robert Venturi and Michael Graves. Fellowships range from six months to two years.

A Small Sustainable Sports Center

The Architectural Review and KOK are calling competitors for the design of a small sustainable sports centre that will serve as a focus for a poor community. Entrants can choose a site from within their own region, but this is not mandatory. It can be located in a rural or an urban context. It can be a sports pavilion or an urban sports facility featuring regeneration. The design must demonstrate clear principles of sustainability not only through the choice of materials and management of energy and waste, with appropriate use of natural lighting and ventilation, but also in social aspects

Floorplan: Scion Showroom Design Competition

Scion, the customize-it-yourself car company, is looking for a cutting edge showroom design to exemplify its image as a youthful, design-conscious brand. This will be achieved through two primary areas, one designed to facilitate an introduction to the brand, incorporating Internet and other user-driven media, the other designed to provide sales and service to new and returning customers. As in all aspects of Scion, from advertising to sales staff to the cars themselves, the designs should emphasize the experience as much as the product.

Nathan Phillips Square Design Competition in Toronto

The city of Toronto is seeking designs for Nathan Philips Square, Toronto’s premier civic space in the heart of the city. Stretching out from the base of Viljo Revell’s sweeping city hall, Nathan Philips Square is home to concerts, farmer’s markets, public events and rallies, and serves a locus for pedestrian activity and interaction. The Design brief calls for improved legibility and infrastructure for the site including pedestrian connections, streetscape and transportation hubs, and performance facilities. At the same time, designers must revitalize the original plan, heightening the original ideals of government, democracy and community.

Ceiling Innovation Awards for Design Excellence

Chicago Metallic is inviting all Architects and Design Professionals to the 2006 Ceiling Innovation Awards for Design Excellence. The competition calls on those individuals who have completed a project between January 2002 and November 2006 and have used at least 50 percent Chicago Metallic products in its construction. Winners will be judged by a panel of nationally recognized architects and they will ultimately be recognized in upcoming Chicago Metallic promotional materials.

ZERO-Energy Building Award

The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) has launched the ZERO-Energy Building Award. The awards program is meant to spur the market for net-zero buildings by recognizing such structures with a $10,000 prize. Eligible buildings must be located in a Northeastern state, and be occupied and documented as a net-zero structure for one year.

2007 Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence

The Rudy Bruner Foundation is excepting applicants for the 2007 Rudy Bruner Award, its biennial celebration of outstanding works of urban design and planning. The foundation awards $50,000 to one Gold Medal winner and $10,000 each to four Silver Medal winners. Successful projects demonstrate the integration of effective process, meaningful values, and good design, presenting innovative solutions to challenging urban problems. Past winners have included the Portland Street Car Project in Portland, Oregon and the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco.

2006 International Bamboo Building Design Competition

Maui based Bamboo Technologies has launched its first ever International Bamboo Building Design Competition. Architects, builders, designers, and students everywhere are invited to submit their design for a bamboo structure. The competition is intended to raise awareness of the uses of bamboo in structurally sound and building code-approved buildings. The winning entry will be built by Bamboo Technologies and receive a $5,000 award.

Re-Designing for All: Taking Our Architectural Heritage Into the Future

The competition aims to select and collect in a Chamber of Deputies publication the ten best projects for making properties of artistic, historic or cultural interest which are publicly owned or open to the public equally accessible and usable by all - the elderly, the disabled, children - through renovation, recovery and restoration work.
Projects will be divided into three categories for selection: graduating theses; unbuilt projects; built projects; four of each will be selected.

2007 Metropolis Magazine Next Generation Design Competition

Metropolis has announced its fourth annual design competition aimed at emerging designers and architects (10 years of practice or less). Entitled “Channel Your Energy,” this year’s competition focuses on energy in all its forms, both good and bad, and calls for entrants to tackle issues of consumption, efficiency, and sustainability. Winners will receive $10,000 to launch or further their idea, as well as the attention of Metropolis readers.

New Campus for Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design

Israel’s preeminent art school is accepting submissions for a new campus just east of the Old City in Jerusalem. Adjacent to city hall and the courts, the site will become home to a 24-hour campus that must accommodate the quiet places of study and contemplation and public spaces of dialogue and celebration. The move will encourage both Bezalel’s physical and societal expansion, making room for an expected 25 percent increase in the student population and a heightened profile in the city.
