This April, students in Los Angeles and in New York City created work on two consecutive weekends as part of Photo Camp, a photography workshop presented by Aperture and Sony. The workshop included a day of shooting with Sony Artisans of Imagery and private editing sessions with Aperture staff and friends, highlighting Sony's strengths in technology and Aperture's commitment to encouraging excellence. The 72 participants were asked to focused on the theme "The Culture of Now," and, after a single day of shooting and an additional day of group discussions and one-on-one review sessions, students submitted three images each for possible inclusion in the exhibition.

The exhibition is printed by Gotham Imaging, with ink and paper provided courtesy of Epson. Additional support was provided by D.A.P. | Art Book Press in Los Angeles, who hosted the LA Photo Camp. NY Photo Camp was held at the Aperture Gallery and Bookstore in New York City.

Special thanks to Kayla Lindquist, the Director of the Sony Artisans of Imagery program, and Michelle Dunn Marsh, who were instrumental in developing Photo Camp, and to all the Artisans who enthusiastically shared their experience and knowledge with the students: Andy Katz, Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier, Brian Smith, and Matthew Jordan Smith; plus Sylvia Plachy, an Aperture-published photographer and guest Artisan at Photo Camp in New York City.

The Critical Moment: Architecture in the Expanded Field
Thursday, September 15, 2011
through Saturday, November 05, 2011
Cooper Union
The Arthur A. Houghton Jr. Gallery
7 East 7th Street
New York, New York

Debuting in the Houghton Gallery at Cooper Union, graduates of the Master of Architecture II Program will have their innovative 2011 thesis projects on display in "The Critical Moment: Architecture in the expanded field." The show, which is free, marks the first public viewing of the Master students' work. Without prescribed boundaries, the projects address a myriad of critical issues shaping today's architectural discourse, ranging from urban theory to the present condition of globalization and the continual emergence of new scientific developments and technologies. The exhibition illuminates the graduates' year-long extensive research using literature, photography, drawing, technology, history and urban studies to develop innovative programs, all of which feature configurations and narratives that bring forth potential solutions that may not be obvious to the viewer.

In 2009, the Master of Architecture (M.Arch. II) enrolled its first class and provides graduate students with an innovative approach and experience to a studio-based, design research post-professional degree. Open to applicants with a first professional degree in architecture, students are challenged to push the frontiers of design and form critical responses to modern and contemporary issues in the practice and theory of architecture.
