Appropriately enough for a store that celebrates locally-made furniture, Voos has opened in Williamsburg, a hub of DIY activity, and draws from Brooklyn’s designer-dense neighborhoods of Red Hook, Dumbo, Greenpoint, and the Navy Yard. A collaboration between architects Serap Demirag and Deger Cengiz, the minimally designed, 1,500-square-foot space was sparked after Demirag spotted a table by Brooklyn-based woodworker Palo Samko at last year’s Architectural Digest Home Design Show. That led to her discovery that “Brooklyn is booming with designers,” she told AN, and now 90 percent of the furniture on display is Brooklyn-designed, with the remaining pieces from New York’s other boroughs. Promoting the local vibe, furniture is also manufactured in town, with about 80 percent of the designers fabricating the pieces themselves. The store has already become a haven for the neighborhood design community, and the ever-expanding list—along with inventory that changes every other month—boasts established names such as Takeshi Miyakawa and City Joinery, as well as up-and-coming designers including store partner Cengiz, Laurie Beckerman, and DMFD Studio. Voos will celebrate its official opening after this month’s ICFF show, and aims to serve not just as a showroom, but as a welcoming hub for the borough’s growing creative economy.
