Familiar Faces Amid Javits Confusion
Though many players have been booted, the convention center's new design is the work of the same architects

While the fog of uncertainty has surrounded expansion plans for the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for years, one thing has remained the same: the architects. Recently, the Spitzer administration expressed frustration at the mounting cost of the Javits's redesign--a reported $1.8 million--which only adds 15 percent more exhibition space to the 1.8 million square-foot facility originally designed by I.M. Pei. As a result, the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC) began reworking the proposed scheme. ESDC spokesman Errol Cockfield told AN that those plans should be released soon, confirming comments made by downstate development czar Patrick Foye at a breakfast hosted by Crain’s New York Business and reported yesterday on newyorkbusiness.com

Cockfield also confirmed that the original design team of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, FXFowle Architects, and A. Espstein and Sons International continues to oversee the project. “It’s a significant revision of the design,” he said. “We can’t go into details except to say that there has been an expanded focus on the users.” When the original scheme was unveiled, exhibitioners and conventioneers complained about the layout, which led to fear that the building might lay idle and exacerbate the skyrocketting costs of the redesign.
