As the sun shone down on the derelict Domino Sugar Refinery and a J-train rumbled across the nearby Williamsburg Bridge, Michael Lapin, president of the Community Preservation Corporation (CPC), made an excited pronouncement. "For the first time in several generations, this part of the waterfront will be open to the public," he told a group of reporters yesterday during a press tour of the future site of a massive mixed-income project CPC is developing. Though the graffiti on nearby walls suggested the area has not been as inaccessible as Lapin claims, the new complex should prove historic on many levels. To fill you in, here is a story from our forthcoming issue (on newsstands August 1) about the project, its preservation as a city landmark, and how that could impact affordable housing, a major component in the project.
