Best of Design Awards> Interiors
Some of the most exciting and innovative American architecture to be completed in 2013 fills out AN's first annual design award program.
Bruce Damonte

On December 6, in New York City, six jurors convened to parse the merits of the more than 250 projects submitted to AN's first annual Best Of Design Awards. The jury included Kate Orff, principal of SCAPE; Thomas Hanrahan, dean of architecture at the Pratt Institute and principal of Hanrahan Meyers Architects; Wes Rozen, principal, Situ Studio; Mic Patterson, partner, Enclos; Dan Wood, principal, WorkAC; and AN's own William Menking. Over the next several days we will be posting their selections in six categories, starting with Building Of The Year and moving through Best Facade, Best Interior, Best Landscape, Best Fabrication Project, and Best Student Built Work. In each category the jury selected a winner and two honorable mentions. The one exception is Building Of The Year, which is a three-way tie.

Best Interior: Winner

Heavy Bit Industries
San Francisco, CA
IwamotoScott Architecture

Heavybit is a new, curated community for cloud developers. The design inserts a series of architectural interventions within an existing three-story warehouse. The interventions define space, accommodate the program, and work materially with the client’s concept of heavy physicality coupled with the ephemerality of the cloud.

“It makes a topography out of a flat space to create places for social interactions.”
—Kate Orff

“The materiality of the interventions sets up a good conversation with the existing building.”
—Thomas Hanrahan

Best Interior: Honorable Mention

Hyundai Capital Operations Center
Atlanta, Georgia
Gensler

The Goal of Hyundai Capital’s project was to increase staff productivity while also promoting employee well being. The concept of nature is brought indoors through vertical gardening and a fabric cloud garden that are used to create open spaces that feel connected to the environment.

"The contrast of the austerity of the space with the lushness of the planted elements is compelling."
—Kate Orff

Best Interior: Honorable Mention

Steelcase Innovation Center
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Shimoda Design Group

This design honors the memory of the space’s past use as a factory through its reworking of a multi-level floor plan. The multiple floors, including a new mezzanine, promotes an arrangement of work settings that encourage varied site lines and circulation overlays that increase chance meetings and design conversations.

"The use of color throughout is very smart and considered."
—Wes Rozen

"The big move of that conference room really helps to define the space overall."
—Dan Wood
