“All of the wood at Townline BBQ was salvaged from an old barn in Pennsylvania or somewhere. We got it from a company called Backroads Lumber, and that’s basically all they do. They find old wooden structures and pull out all the old wood and you wind up with this really fantastic old growth–quality lumber that you simply can’t find new.”

“Bjork Carle Woodworking did our Columbia slide library project. Bruce Bjork is an incredibly skilled craftsman and likes unique design problems and figuring out ways to engineer them. These guys are very competitive with pricing. They give the same service at less than half the cost of many other woodworkers.”
Scott Marble
“Daniel DeMarco and Associates are super professional. They do all of the millwork on the Oscar de la Renta and Ralph Lauren stores that we do. And they meet a deadline: They’ll tell you it takes eight weeks and it’ll take eight weeks.”
Will Meyer
“Plyboo, supplied by Bettencourt Green Building Supplies, was the real standout material on Banq. The dining room’s ceiling is a lattice, and the natural striping of the Plyboo, which is recycled bamboo, picks up on its pattern in a subtle way. It’s extraordinarily dense, and hard to drive nails into, so we developed ways of gluing it because we liked the aesthetics so much.”

“We’ve worked with Material Design Workshop on a few projects, and every single thing we’ve thrown at them they’ve made perfect: cabinets, millwork, countertops, you name it. We always use them for the not-for-profits, but they’re capable of very high-end work. And it’s a family business: The wife does all the shop drawings.”

“For the yellow poplar bark panels at Parsons, we flew down to North Carolina to see Highland Craftsmen. When they’re logging, if they see intact bark, they can literally slip it off the trunk. They saved all the thickest, craggiest pieces of bark they could get for us. We arranged the panels to coordinate the grain, and had them shipped to our fabricator.… Legere Group has a very sophisticated plant with automated equipment that makes it easier for them to do complex tasks. They did bamboo millwork for us—really tightly designed, CNC-milled, perforated pieces—and a CNC-milled graphic in solid-color MDF panels. We gave them a digital file, and they milled it in Connecticut and assembled it on site. It came out really nicely.”
“The giant slat screen, the bar, and the juice bar are three of the most notable elements of the design, and all can be attributed to Mark Richey Woodworking. The lightness of the slat screen, both in color and assembly, complements the lighting design to create a warm, relaxing dining atmosphere. The bar is seamlessly crafted and showcases the elegance of Rouge Tomate.”

“For this Asian-inspired screen in the restaurant at Thompson LES, Billy Hennessy at Wood In The Past did an incredibly precise job laser-cutting the paneling—really remarkable millwork.”
