Missoni′s New Mission

Missoni, an Italian fashion house famous for its use of colorful fabrics and patterns, has finally launched its first American “lifestyle” showroom inside New York’s DDC Design Post. MissoniHome’s product line had previously been available separately at various locations, but now design-minded consumers can browse towels, rugs, and bedding at one destination. The entire collection is housed inside a 200-square-foot showroom dressed seasonally by the Missoni Studio team.

Wanda Jelmini, creative director at T&J Vestor, the textile manufacturer for MissoniHome, said this one-stop experience is a good thing. Missoni started as–and still is–a family business, and Jelmini, the niece of the fashion house’s co-founder Rosita Missoni, proudly emphasizes the company’s philosophy: harmony.

There are a plethora of colors available, knit into dynamic geometric patterns such as the company’s iconic zigzags and waves. While the combination of such bold colors and patterns in less skilled hands could be tiring to the eyes, here the result is surprisingly soothing.

Currently, the showroom bursts with springtime hues–carrot orange, sunny yellow, and warm reds–arranged in simple stripes and blown-up florals in lycra and mekora (silk and cotton blend). Fabric-covered hanging lanterns add to the vernal atmosphere. In the age where it is usually safer to play minimalist, MissoniHome boldly continues an enduring maximalist tradition.
