Flavaboom, a new frozen yogurt shop in Chelsea, brings the art of summertime desserts to a scientific level. Designed by New York-based Dune, a firm best known for its colorful amorphous furniture, the concept for the prototype store is an ultramodern laboratory, complete with futuristic details.

The 1500-square foot shop features a 30-foot long topping bar and glossy white walls. Dune incorporated energy-efficient lighting, such as metal halide fixtures and an LED illumination system that surrounds a wall of self-serve yogurt machines.  The LED display projects hundreds of “light show” variations that are visible not only to customers but also to pedestrians outside through a large plate-glass window. To maximize space for circulation, Dune developed “floating” seating nooks. Framed in vibrant pink faux-leather (a new vinyl formulation that is both PVC-free and graffiti-proof), each cantilevered seat is backed by plum-hued mirrors that add a sense of depth. “There is an indestructible quality to the materials.” said Richard Shemtov, Dune president and founder. “Being eco-conscience means not needing to redo a project. Longevity was a key factor.”
