Perry Rubenstein is the latest Manhattan art dealer to open in LA. He commissioned Kulapat Yantrasast, principal of wHY Architecture, to create an exemplary gallery on Highland Avenue, right in the middle of the city. On first sight, it could be a club: an enigmatic black box, with an unmarked door and two office windows screened with perforated metal. Inside, an expansive white room is bathed in natural light from a ceiling lantern. A knife-edge soffit is cut away to reveal the bone structure of bleached fir joists. A corner window frames an inner courtyard: a place to pause before continuing on to three smaller rooms. A roof garden for sculpture, installations, and events will be completed in October. It’s an ideal complex for every kind of art, responsive to LA’s light and climate, and to the gritty character of Hollywood.
