Every year, the Architectural League of New York gives its Emerging Voices award to eight young architecture practices. The awardees are chosen through a juried portfolio competition open to firms in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The jury selects the recipients with distinct approaches to design that have the potential to influence the future of the profession. It is one of the most coveted awards in North American architecture.

Productora

“We like to keep it simple with the least amount of details and materials as possible. The design philosophy of our office is that you don’t need to literally open up the entire palette of materials and typologies to make interesting and fresh architecture.”
Wonne Ickx, Productora

MASS Design Group

“The real mission needs to be educating the public that design is fundamental to achieving projects that produce social value, and they should demand that service. It is only then that designers will regain a seat at the table and deciding how our future infrastructure will be developed.”
Alan Ricks, MASS Design Group

DIGSAU

“Every project presents a unique set of constraints that become key in our design process. The potent ideas for each project are derived from available materials and labor. Materiality is definitely an area of focus. We start with a wide berth of looking at different materials and honing in, looking at samples, mockups, and experimenting with the materials.”
Mark Sanderson, DIGSAU

Cao | Perrot Studio

“Ours is a very personal vision, a very personal voice. It only works if we don’t overwhelm ourselves. Keeping the office small is the only way to make that work. Being small gives us time for each project. It’s a very free way of doing things.”
Andy Cao, Cao | Perrot

“We never wanted a style. We were trying to build affordably. I think, in the location where we are, it’s the most important thing.”

“Architecture is a messy business, codes, budget, what people want…to be able to synthesize from that mess is where our projects come from.”
