The principals of the respected New York firm Rogers Marvel Architects have decided to form two independent practices, to be known as Marvel Architects and Rogers Partners. Jonathan Marvel and Robert Rogers came to a “mutual agreement to formally dissolve their current practice,” according to a statement.

Over the past 20 years, Rogers Marvel has built a diverse practice, including public, private, and cultural commissions. Notable projects have included the Studio Museum in Harlem, 14 modernist townhouses on State Street in Brooklyn, Battery Park City streetscapes and security improvements, and an elevated park at 55 Water Street in Manhattan.

“Rogers Marvel Architects has been an unqualified success,” said Jonathan Marvel in a statement. “The resulting spaces—both public and private—have won numerous awards, but more importantly, have contributed to the health and beauty of their communities."

Arguably, the firm’s public and urban design work set them apart from their peers, and its smart and sensitive approach to cities and landscapes has since been emulated by many New York offices.

Each principal acted as the design lead on individual projects, so division of the firm should be fairly straightforward. “We naturally developed in two separate directions. The new firms will allow us each to pursue our visions and ambitions,” said Rogers in a statement. “I’m eager to expand a new architecture and urban design practice in this time of growing global concerns and opportunities.”
