Philadelphia is joining the ranks of supertall cities. A new tower for Comcast, set to rise 1,121 feet, will be the tallest building between New York and Chicago. Designed by Foster + Partners, the 59 story tower will include space for Comcast, a 200 room Four Seasons Hotel, additional rentable office space, as well as production facilities for two Comcast-owned local stations.

The stacked design culminates in an illuminated beacon that will become the new focal point in the city skyline. At ground level, the block-long lobby will include restaurants and retail and connect to a SEPTA commuter rail station. “This is a very special project. It is an opportunity to create a unique and sustainable model for mixed-use, high density development, which uniquely combines spaces for high tech research and development with restaurants, gardens, fitness facilities and a significant public reception space—a window on Philadelphia,” said Norman Foster in a statement.

The building, which will be dedicated to software engineers and technology, will complement the company’s adjacent headquarters, the Comcast Center, designed by Robert A.M. Stern. The developers of the project will seek a LEED Platinum rating for the tower.

The $1.2 billion project is the most visible sign that Philadelphia is shaking off its image as a down and out post-industrial city.
