For three decades, Macy’s Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles was a chic address for shopping and dining. But in the past decade it experienced a significant decline. Originally designed by Charles Luckman, the complex will be receiving a complete renovation slated for completion in 2015. Helmed by developer Wayne Ratkovich, it will be rechristened “The Bloc.”

“I think this property has the opportunity to be the heart of downtown L.A., the center point,” Ratkovich told GlobeSt.com.

The complaint of many who visit the current building is that it reflects the fortress-like aesthetic emblematic of the 1970s mall. Several design strategies have been deployed to remake it into a more welcoming atmosphere, including removing the atrium roof, installing a sunlit public plaza, removing the existing tiled courtyard, and replacing the intimidating brick wall with shop windows, outdoor dining areas, and new entryways for pedestrians and cars.

According to the developers, "Johnson Fain was engaged to assist with the development of the concept and to oversee the schematic design. Now Studio One Eleven is moving forward with the implementation." Studio One Eleven is responsible for the retail design, McCartan will be renovating the Sheraton hotel, Selbert Perkins Design will be designing signage, and EPT Design will oversee landscape and streetscape strategies.
