855 South Broadway
If you asked most fashion brands where in Los Angeles they would plant a flagship store, they probably would not say Broadway. Yet that is just what Acne Studios did. In December, the Swedish company opened its largest store to date in the Eastern Columbia Building, occupying 5,000 square feet of the Claud Beelman icon.
The store nods to its Art Deco surrounds with terrazzo floors and machined aluminum partitions that evoke the building’s steel frame construction. A mushroom sculpture by Belgian artist Carsten Höller serves as an organic counterpoint to the space’s industrial aesthetic. Blue carpet, custom seating, and the ready-to-wear garments themselves add color.
“It wasn’t our original intention to open in this part of Los Angeles,” said Acne Studios chairman Mikael Schiller. “But we fell in love with the Eastern Columbia Building as well as the opportunity to do something beyond a flagship store.”
