Pikes Peak is getting a new visitors’ center that is designed to be “one with the mountain” while providing sheltered outdoor areas featuring unobstructed views to the east.

In January, the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and GWWO Architects revealed the $30 million Summit House Complex, which will replace a 50-year-old visitors’ center atop the 14,115-foot peak, known as America’s Mountain.

“There was a distinct desire for something modern and unique for Pikes Peak, but also an appeal for the building to be as unobtrusive as possible,” said Jack Glavan, manager of Pikes Peak.

The design calls for a predominantly one-story structure clad with materials similar to Pikes Peak granite, so it will appear to blend into the mountainside. Completion is expected by mid-2019.

“People really wanted something that put the mountain first,” said GWWO principal Alan Reed.
