The Department of Architecture in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University invites applications for the position of department chairperson.
Architecture at Cornell is one of the oldest programs of its kind and has a long and distinguished tradition of influential scholarship, creative practice, and pedagogical innovation. Situated in a world-class research university, the department is home to two top-ranked, internationally renowned professional programs—the B.Arch and M.Arch degrees—as well as research-focused post-professional degrees and a Ph.D. in the history of architecture and urban development. The department’s faculty includes emerging and established practitioners, scholars, as well as an array of internationally distinguished visiting faculty who are rising in the field.
The department places high value on teaching excellence and considers the faculty and students to be collectively and collaboratively responsible for advancing architectural pedagogy. The department also expects its faculty and graduate students to contribute to the production of new knowledge, either through scholarship or creative practice, broadly understood. The successful candidate must be able to support these institutional priorities.
The department’s principal locus of academic and administrative activity is in Ithaca NY, where the opportunities and resources of the college and the university are abundant. The department also has fully integrated, well-resourced, semester-long programs in New York City and Rome.
Desirable qualifications for this position include a record of distinction in professional practice and/or research, scholarship, and teaching; experience in academic administration; a global perspective on architectural education and practice; and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The chair’s responsibilities include leadership of the department’s academic and operational affairs, and creative support and direction in advancing the department’s goals and objectives. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the chair will work in close collaboration with both the department faculty and the college dean. The qualifications of the candidate should be consistent with a tenured appointment at the level of an associate or full professor, with a terminal degree in architecture or a related field.
Application Process
Interested individuals should send a letter of application that indicates how their skills and experiences align with the stated qualifications for the position along with a resume that reflects notable achievements and a 10 page (maximum) summary portfolio of creative work.
Nominations and applications will be reviewed beginning November 2016 and will be accepted until the position is filled. The new department chair appointment will begin July 2017.
