2019 Best of Design Award for Unbuilt – Commercial: Aurora

Location: Mexico City
Inspired by the relatively temperate climate of Mexico City, this new eight-story commercial office building plays with the relationship between inside and outside, seeking to create a dynamic space in between. A monolithic facade has been carefully sculpted to create a semipermeable surface. The flatness and solidity of the existing streetscape led the designers to carve an entryway that draws people in off the narrow sidewalk. A curved cut appears to defy the weight of the precast concrete panels of the facade. This gesture is echoed in a series of cuts focused toward a view of the mountains beyond; their variation ensures a unique experience on every floor.
