More fall 2020 virtual lectures and talks to mark on your calendar

Although some architecture and design schools have been a bit late in announcing their respective public lecture series line-ups for the 2020 fall semester for obvious reasons, new and noteworthy additions continue to roll in as (largely virtual) classes commence across the country.

Adding to our previous list that included upcoming virtual programming from the likes of Harvard GSD, the University of Southern California, Carnegie Mellon, and others, here are a generous handful of more lectures and talks for your socially-distanced autumn enlightenment.

AN will continue to add to this list as more lecture series are finalized and announced. Specific dates and times can be confirmed on the events pages of each respective school/program, and all are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Most events require advance registration.

The Cooper Union

Kicking off The Cooper Union’s fall 2020 virtual programming schedule are talks by/between Rania Ghosn and Elisa Iturbe, Nicholas Galanin, Pamela Ronald and Raoul Adamchak, Mary Robinson and Rhiana Gunn-Wright, Omar Gowayed and Kendra Krueger, and others as part of Cooper Union x Climate Week 2020, a series of free lectures and events “addressing our shared future through the lens of global Green New Deals, environmental racism, and community action.” The series begins on September 18.

Knowlton School of Architecture at Ohio State University

Knowlton’s autumn 2020 Baumer Series has been retooled as Baumer Conversations, a series of short talks by guest speakers, all followed by conservations between the speakers and members of the Knowlton faculty. Among those slated for the coming weeks are Dan Immergluck, professor in Urban Studies at Georgia State University; Sara Zewde, founding principal of New York City-based landscape architecture, urbanism, and public art firm Studio Zewde; landscape architect Gary Hilderbrand, and British Israeli architect Eyal Weizman of Forensic Architecture at Goldsmiths, University of London. All talks will be streamed live on Youtube.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Gilles Retsin, Maurice Cox, Tatiana Bilbao, and Yinka Ilori are among those scheduled for the free 2020 fall lecture series presented by the School of Architecture at Rensselaer.

Sam Fox School at Washington University in St. Louis

Sam Fox School’s virtually-hosted fall 2020 public programming includes lectures from Walter Hood, Margarita Jover, Deborah Berke, and a wide range of artists, designers, historians, critics, and creators.

The Southern California Institute of Architecture

SCI-Arc’s virtual fall 2020 public lecture series kicks off September 16 with Ghana-born British architect—and 2018 RIBA President contender—Elsie Owusu, and continues through early December with livestreamed presentations from Ruha Benjamin, Charles L. Davis II, Andrés Jaque, Frida Escobedo, Jack Halberstam, Dominic and Christopher Leong, Trevor McFedries, Yinka Ilori, and Graham Harman in conversation with Sylvia Lavin.

Syracuse University

Among the guest speakers currently scheduled on Syracuse Architecture’s fall 2020 events calendar: London-based architect and theorist Jack Self; Brandi Mack and Shelley Davis Roberts of Oakland, California-based Designing Justice + Designing Spaces; Brooklyn-based artist and designer Nathan Williams; and architect and educator Sekou Cooke in conversation with Sean Anderson, associate curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art.

University of Massachusetts Amherst

The Department of Architecture at UMass Amherst’s fall 2020 lecture series commenced on September 9 with a talk from Chicago-based photographer, writer, educator, and former critic Lee Bay. Scheduled guest lecturers in the coming weeks include Bille Tsien, Alberto Pérez-Gómez, and Farshid Moussavi. All lectures are held on Zoom.

University of Notre Dame

The School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame’s fall lecture series is hosted on Zoom Webinar each Wednesday; the presentations are then posted on the school’s Youtube channel. Scheduled speakers include Michael Manfredi of Weiss/Manfredi, Jordanian landscape architect Lara Zureikat, architect and urban designer Marieanne Khoury-Vogt, and Zena Howard, managing director of Perkins and Will’s North Carolina practice.

University of Virginia School of Architecture

Upcoming Zoom-based lectures hosted by UVA’s School of Architecture will find speakers including Katherine McKittrick, Chelina Odbert, Dietmar Offenhuber, and Lesley Lokko taking the virtual stage this fall semester.
