What does Governor Cuomo’s resignation mean for his signature transit projects?

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo put in his two weeks’ notice yesterday, ending a ten-year run after the New York State attorney general released a report last week concluding that Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women and retaliated when complaints were made public. Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul will assume the office once Cuomo vacates.

But what does this mean for the massive infrastructure and development projects that Cuomo personally pushed for? In the case of the $2.1 billion La Guardia Airport AirTrain project that recently received federal approval, at least, it looks unlikely to move forward. Yesterday, shortly after Cuomo announced his resignation, Port Authority workers sent the following letter to executive director Rick Cotton, according to the NY Daily News: “For too long, Gov. Cuomo and his staff have repeatedly pushed the agency to make non-transparent, politically motivated decisions, including decisions that squander the trust and money of our bondholders, customers, and the general public.” The letter also called on the authority to examine whether Cuomo exercised his authority improperly to push the project ahead over the protests of transit experts.

Scarlet Fire, a Grateful Dead-inspired cannabis store, opens in Toronto

Toronto dispensary Scarlet Fire Cannabis Co. opened on Monday of this week, bringing some jam band influence to the Canadian city’s weed scene. The thematically appropriate retail store, designed by SevenPoint Interiors, leans heavily on the “scarlet” part of the shop’s name in the red display cases, couches, and dividing walls, but Grateful Dead merchandise and music is also featured throughout.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Freeman House is for sale for the first time ever

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built from 1923 through 1925, the Freeman House in Los Angeles has officially gone up for sale for $4.25 million. The home, only one of four built by Wright using concrete blocks patterned with textiles, is listed both on the National Register of Historic Places and as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. Prior to going on the market earlier this week, the University of Southern California had claimed ownership of the 2,884-square-foot, two-bedroom building for more than 30 years.

Homes in the U.S. are now selling quicker than they can be built

Construction is rebounding on a tear after a disastrous decline last year, but even the industry’s frenzied pace is failing to keep up with demand for new homes. According to the Wall Street Journal, low-interest rates and the rise of remote work is driving more and more Americans to buy a house, but soaring material costs and ongoing labor shortages are leading to some sellers to turn down prospective buyers; there just isn’t enough supply available. Accordingly, the median price of a new home in the U.S. has risen by 6.1 percent from last year, moving to $363,000, as buyers seem fine with opening their wallets.

Amazon finally opens its $1.5 billion air hub in Kentucky

Amazon has officially begun operations at its $1.5 billion air hub spread across 882 acres in Northern Kentucky, capping four years of construction. The opening of the new terminal at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is the latest step forward for the company’s Amazon Air program, which launched in 2016 as the shopping giant’s in-company cargo air service. The hub campus contains seven buildings and a parking structure, and is expected to eventually employ 2,000 workers.

Jean Nouvel’s Museum of Art Pudong opens in Shanghai

The Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) in Shanghai is finally complete. The sprawling, light-filled arts center designed by Atelier Jean Nouvel spans 581,251 square feet right on the city’s Lujiazui peninsula. The white granite and glass facade of the new MAP is particularly impressive and ethereal, as is the four-story central exhibition hall.
