Back in December, Twitter employees posted photos of makeshift bedrooms company leaders erected in conference rooms at Twitter’s San Francisco Headquarters. Some dismissed the bedrooms as a sick joke, a could-this-really-be manifestation of Twitter CEO Elon Musk’s “extremely hardcore” vision for the social media giant. It turns out that the bedrooms really are here to stay—if the company gets the proper permits.

Earlier this week San Francisco building inspectors told Twitter’s construction company that it had two weeks to submit a building permit that allows for the existing conference room sleepers.

The inspection was prompted by a Forbes article that verified the rooms’ existence through anonymous employee interviews. In order to get the newly-required permits, Twitter’s contractor has to send over revised floor plans that depict the new bedrooms.

At the time of the Forbes story, Musk shot off an angry tweet to San Francisco Mayor London Breed, throwing in a S.F. baby’s horrific accidental encounter with a narcotic red herring for good measure:

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, if Twitter doesn’t want to obtain the permits, it can put the office chairs and share screen back in the rooms, reverting them to their original use.

The December pictures revealed a sleeping quarter with a queen bed, a nightstand, and two armchairs atop bright orange carpets. At the time, one Twitter employee told Forbes that the bedrooms are “[not a good look. It’s yet another unspoken sign of disrespect. There is no discussion. Just like, beds showed up.” The source added that there’s likely four to eight sleeping rooms per floor.
