Thanks to a new program at America’s favorite sandwich shop, diners can juice up their electric vehicles while they enjoy a Fresh Melt®.

Subway has partnered with Coral Gables, Florida–based GenZ EV Solutions to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at select restaurants this year. The stations are much more than a simple charging dock: each Subway Oasis will feature picnic tables, Wi-Fi, restrooms, green space, and playgrounds. To sweeten the deal, customers at the stations will be able to take advantage of special sandwich promotions while they wait for their EVs to recharge.

GenZ EV Solutions is working with the Detroit-based EV charging network RED E Charging on the project.

“Equitable access to charging is essential to the adoption of EVs in the future and Subway’s scale will play an important role in democratizing charging infrastructure for millions of Americans,” said Jose Valls, CEO of GenZ EV Solutions, in a press release. “By coupling our technology and know-how with Red E Charging’s strategic site selection and Subway’s network of restaurants across the U.S., we are continuing to make key strides in building the EV infrastructure of tomorrow.”

Subway is not the first fast food establishment to dip its toes into the EV world. Business Insider reported that Starbucks is working with ChargePoint and Volvo on charging stations on the West Coast, while a California Taco Bell franchisee is planning to open 120 charging stations. While these initiatives are regional, Subway’s project would be the first national EV charging network.

Subway is working with its franchisees to identify sites for the new stations at both its traditional and nontraditional locations; the chargers are intended to generate additional income for stores. Interested owners can contact Subway to see if their property would be a good fit for the stations.

“We’re constantly exploring new ways to innovate and exceed our guests’ expectations for a high-quality, convenient experience,” added Chief Operating and Insights Officer of Subway Mike Kappitt. “Our partnership with GenZ EV Solutions is a win for our guests, our franchisees, and our planet, creating a dedicated space for drivers to charge their vehicle while enjoying their favorite Subway sandwich.”
