Construction has begun at Wesleyan University on an adaptive reuse project by Bruner/Cott. In Middletown, Connecticut, the Boston firm is helping transform an 18,700-square-foot factory complex into an integrative arts lab. The project will both renovate the existing structure while also adding a new one.

Bruner/Cott’s design will deliver new space for visual and performing arts at Wesleyan. There will be maker spaces and a flexible arts commons. Additions to the existing T-shape complex on the corner of Hamlin and College Streets will expand capacity for students and faculty to perform and rehearse.

The building under renovation is a former Mohawk Manufacturing Company plant located between Wesleyan’s main campus and downtown Middletown. The factory complex consists of multiple structures, with the oldest dating back to 1850 along with an addition from 1922. The former manufacturing building has seen better days: Many of its windows are broken and the brickwork is faded and dirty.

Renderings by Bruner/Cott show a flat-roof structure with a contemporary take on a shingle style facade. The addition adopts a similar proportion to that of the former industrial buildings. It will house a voluminous performing arts center for dance recitals and the like. A multistory portal will connect the two buildings.

Upon completion, the factory-turned-arts lab will encourage community, collaboration, and conversation, Bruner/Cott shared. The spaces will be arranged accordingly to support interdisciplinary work. It will be the university’s first building to combine multiple arts disciplines, as historically individual disciplines were each housed in their own structures.

The project will add to Bruner/Cott’s expansive portfolio of university projects. The firm is currently renovating Gund Hall at Harvard University and co-designing student housing at Yale.

Construction at Wesleyan University on the new integrative arts lab should complete in January 2025.
