2018 Iron Designer Challenge

This year’s design challenge is to create a structure that, when viewed from different perspectives, creates a profile different from the objects that make up the structure, creating a unique perceptual experience. Ten teams of high school students and industry professionals will compete in the 2018 Iron Designer Challenge: Smoke&Mirrors! The Iron Designer Challenge is a fund-raising event for the Urban Assembly School of Design and Constriction. Projects will be built in front of a live audience and judged by acclaimed architects, engineers and contractors at the School of Design and Construction on June 7, 2018. One team will emerge as New York’s 9th Iron Designer. Structural Ingenuity and Best Use of a “Secret Material” will also be awarded, as well as the audience’s People’s Choice Award. The event is open to the public, and guests will enjoy drinks, appetizers, music, and a chance to mingle with industry leaders, students, and participate in a silent auction that supports the nonprofit Urban Assembly School.
