Beyond the Metrics with Ken Smith, ASLA

A landscape architect equally at home in the worlds of art, architecture, and urbanism, Ken Smith, ASLA, develops the relationship among art, contemporary culture, and landscape in his work that pushes beyond the traditional landscape forms and materials. His New York-based practice, WORKSHOP: Ken Smith Landscape Architect, is committed to creating public landscapes that improve the quality of urban life, with a particular emphasis on projects that explore the symbolic content and expressive power of landscape as art form. Signature projects include the East River Waterfront Esplanade, the TFANA Arts Plaza in Brooklyn’s BAM Cultural District, the Museum of Modern Art’s roof garden, and the Croton Water Filtration Plant. Smith has taught at Harvard, CCNY, and other universities and institutions around the world.

Ken Smith’s presentation is part of the 17th Annual Landscape Portfolio Design Lecture Series, Designing the Unexpected, from The New York Botanical Garden’s Adult Education Program. Support is provided by the Heimbold Foundation.
