BKLYN DESIGNS 2017 Installation Competition

March 17, 2017

Founded in 2003 by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, BKLYN DESIGNS was one of the first design fairs to shine a spotlight on the creative economy in Brooklyn, and helped put many Brooklyn makers and supporters on the map.

Attendees include designers, architects, builders, developers, store buyers, industry influencers, educators, urban planners and design-savvy consumers, who all come together to celebrate the borough’s rich design heritage, iconic style and bustling creative community. With thousands of visitors over the three-day weekend, BKLYN DESIGNS is one of the most vibrant shows in New York City.

The 2017 edition is May 5-7 at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint.

Call for Installations
For the first time, BKLYN DESIGNS is commissioning an original site-specific installation. We’re looking for an installation driven by the concept of connectivity. Think of the ties that bond us – creatively, socially, technologically, geographically – and the aspects that make Brooklyn a unique hub of connection.

Eligibility and Winning Proposal
This call is open to those with demonstrated experience in the conceptualization, design and production of installations including artists, designers, architects, and engineers, among others.

The winning individual or team will be based in Brooklyn and can be able to easily produce and manage the final design and construction of the installation, and hold as needed meetings with the BKLYN DESIGNS team. The winning individual or team will be able to work within a 2-3 day time frame for the installation and deinstallation of the installation of the project between May 2-4 (installation) and May 7-8 (deinstallation). Interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged. Teams that have at least one Brooklyn-based member are eligible.

Site Specificity
Proposals should take into consideration the specific location and space of the Brooklyn Expo Center, and should demonstrate the understanding of the various show components (exhibitors, curated marketplace, panel discussions and workshops).

The winning designer(s) will be awarded a production budget of $1,000 for construction, assembly and disassembly of the installation. If installation needs to be rigged, BKLYN DESIGNS can cover the costs of rigging if installation weighs 200 lbs or less. Any expenses that fall outside of the granted budget are assumed by the winning team. The winning team will be responsible for the management of any manufacturers/vendors involved in production.

Dates and Deadlines
Applicants are required to register for the competition in advance of the submission date. Registrations must be received by February 28, 2017 before midnight. Projects that have not registered by the deadline will not be reviewed. After registration, each applicant will receive an email with a registration confirmation.
