Join us at 11 am EST on Zoom for an hour-long, hands-on color workshop led by Fritz Horstman, Director of Education at The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. Additional space is now available, kindly register here.

Working from Josef Albers’s book Interaction of Color, we will experiment with colors that you may already have around your home. We will try our hands at exercises that Albers invented in his time teaching at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and Yale, such as One-Color-Becomes-Two, Reversed Grounds, and Afterimage. Before the session begins, please gather the following materials. The more colors the better.

•Old magazines, gift wrap and packaging (we’ll be finding flat colorful areas that can be cut out)
•Construction paper (if possible)
•Colorful shirts, napkins, place mats, book covers – anything flat made up of a single color (these things won’t be cut)
•Scissors
•White paper
•Glue

These workshops are useful to all artists and non-artists alike, and no prior experience is required. If you are interested in leading a self-directed color workshop with kids, visit albersforkids.org.

Fritz Horstman has worked with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation since 2004. Prior to organizing In Thread and On Paper: Anni Albers in Connecticut, he organized exhibitions of the Albers’ work in Italy, Ireland and Croatia. In his role as education director he has lectured and taught workshops at MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Dessau Bauhaus, the Royal Academy of Art, Harvard, Yale, Princeton and more. Horstman’s writing has been published by Harvard University, The Royal Academy of Art, The Bauhaus Archiv, and others. Also an artist, his sculptures, drawings and videos have been shown in many international venues.

Glass House Presents at New Canaan Library is an occasional series of talks and events about architecture, design, and Modernism in New Canaan and beyond. The series is organized by The Glass House and hosted by the Library.
