Details:
Join the Dallas Historical Society for this Brown Bag Lecture on Jerry Bywaters by Sam Ratcliffe,

Jerry Bywaters (1906-89), a native of Paris, Texas, filled a variety of key roles during his 60 years on the Dallas arts scene. An artist and graduate of SMU, Bywaters served as art critic of the Dallas Morning News during the 1930s. During these years, he was involved with the loosely-affiliated group of Dallas artists who became nationally known as the “Dallas Nine”; their work has since been characterized as “Lone Star Regionalism.” Bywaters subsequently served as director of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (now known as the Dallas Museum of Art) from 1943-63, bringing in a number of significant exhibitions, including some that today would be considered “blockbusters.” He also taught art and art history at SMU from 1937 to 1976; following his retirement, he began donating his papers to his alma mater, a process he continued until his death.

Cost: Free and open to the public.
