School of Visual Arts presents Making ROOM, an exhibition that highlights the work of third-year BFA Interior Design: Built Environments students, who were tasked with designing a hotel room that caters to an artist of their choosing. The exhibition will be on view from Saturday, November 23, through Saturday, January 4, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.

The students have created full-scale virtual mockups of their rooms, designing the architecture of the space and the items within the space. The exhibition consists of several large-scale, synced wall and floor projections that give a glimpse into elements of the rooms, as well as floor plans of the rooms. Banners depict each student’s project in detail, outlining the process from concept to finished renderings. Detailed, to-scale physical models are on display at the entry of the gallery space.

A critical stage in the design process is being able to experience what a space is like by being within it. Through industry-standard virtual reality hardware and software, each student’s full design is also viewable through a VR headset located in the gallery. Through the headset, viewers are dropped into an immersive experience that allows them to walk around in the designed rooms.

In conjunction with the exhibition, several senior thesis banners from the BFA Interior Design: Built Environments class of 2019 are also displayed in the main hallway, adjacent to the gallery.

Participating designers include Hwanil Chang, Hongyun Kou, Hyun Jung Park, Jiajun Shi, Ye Quan and Alexis Waxter. Featured 2019 alumni include Rana Afsar, Jackson Dahl and Christine Marsigliano.
