The School of Architecture (SoA) at UNC Charlotte is pleased to present its Fall 2020 lecture series, featuring five public events offered virtually. The series opens on September 25 with Jack Travis, FAIA, NOMAC.

“The focus of this year’s lecture series is diversity and inclusion—an examination of culture and social justice that is both timely and timeless,” said SoA Director Blaine Brownell. “Our lecturers include practitioners of color and others who work at the scale of urban planning, architecture, installation art, and graphic design. Their contributions to the profession are both provocative and uplifting.”

Travis has titled his lecture “Atmospheres + Perspectives.”

“Practice and pedagogy are integral parts of the traditional role of any architect,” Travis says. “A Black architect, in today’s society and all throughout the past, has had to shoulder the extra burden of being advocate and mentor for the race. ‘Atmospheres + Perspectives’ will discuss the role of a Black architect from my perspective, provide further insight as to the accomplishments Black design professionals of the past, and attempt to make a case for evolving a Black aesthetic in the environmental design disciplines.”

Travis will be followed by:

Chris Cornelius, founding principal of studio:indigenous, on October 9

Theo Deutinger, founder and head of TD, on October 23

Maryam Eskandari, founder of MIIM Designs, on November 6

Zena Howard, FAIA, LEED AP, North Carolina Office Principal & Managing Director at Perkins + Will, on December 4.

The SoA Fall 2020 lecture series is sponsored by AIA Charlotte. All talks will take place at 2:00 pm via Zoom and will also be available subsequently for future viewing on the College of Arts + Architecture YouTube channel and website.
