Walking Tour: The Capitol Riverfront – A New Neighborhood Built on Industrial Foundations

August 5, 2015 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm EDT

Join AIA|DC for a walking tour of this growing, mixed-use, transit-oriented Capitol Riverfront neighborhood–a 500-acre area which has been transformed from its industrial naval past into one of the largest riverfront developments in the country. Once an industrial backyard of the city, the Capitol Riverfront has experienced significant rezoning, public investment, transportation investments, and private development. The Capitol Riverfront is approximately 34% built-out on its way to a total development build-out of 36+ million square-feet of new projects.

This program will begin at the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District (BID) office to view a scale model and take in a birds-eye view of the neighborhood. Michael Stevens, president of the Capitol Riverfront BID, will give an overview of the area’s history, the development forces that have shaped the neighborhood, and both current and future development plans. We will also visit the Michael Graves-designed headquarters of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Yards project and Yards Park, Canal Park, the Arthur Capper Carrollsburg housing rebuild, and the Nationals ballpark/1st Street redevelopment area.
