At approximately 9:27 a.m. this morning, FDNY responded to a cloud of black smoke billowing atop 125 Greenwich Street, otherwise known as The Greenwich, an 88-story tower that’s currently under construction designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects in Lower Manhattan. The building’s 272 condominium units were designed by March & White.

The smoke could be seen from as far away as New Jersey. Minutes after the black clouds amassed, NYPD helicopter units flocked to the site and confirmed that a fire had started at the tower’s top floor. FDNY put out the fire at approximately 10:06 a.m. NYPD later said that all construction workers had been accounted for, and nobody was injured.

Construction has been underway on 125 Greenwich Street for the past five years, and the tower’s facade installation finished in late February. Units in the building just hit the market on Monday, March 18. Homebuyers are supposed to move into the units this summer, most of which are selling for about $3 million.

After the fire started this morning, construction workers on the roof had to exit wherever they were via the stairwell to safety. “We ran down the stairs the whole way from the 69th floor,” Chris Alvarez, an electrician working on the tower, told local reporters.

DOB inspectors determined that workers on the structure’s roof cooling tower were performing welding operations to install brackets when insulation behind the wall caught fire. DOB quickly issued a Stop Work Order for all hot work operations on the roof. Violations were then issued to the contractor for Failure to Safeguard.

Building inspectors told local reporters that they’re continuing their investigation into the source of the fire.

A spokesperson for the building told AN: “The fire that started this morning was a small incident that took place in an isolated area on the building’s roof and did not cause any injuries. There was no structural damage, and the interior of the building was not impacted. While construction is currently stopped in the affected area, work continues in the building and the construction timeline will move ahead as planned. Safety is a priority for the team, which is also grateful for the work of the FDNY.”
