Architecture Omi Residency

November 21, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 11:55 pm EST

Omi International Arts Center announces a new residency program for architects in 2017. This residency will be the first of its kind in the nation, inviting 10 early- to mid-career architects from around the world to develop their work during a full two-week residency on Omi’s campus. Architecture Omi aims to nurture experimentation at the intersection of architecture, art and landscape. Residents will be chosen through a competitive juried process, and are invited to attend at no cost to themselves, except for travel expenses. Abundant, chef-catered meals and comfortable, beautiful accommodations are provided in a scenic setting in Columbia County, New York. Omi is located near the town of Hudson, two hours north of New York City by train.

  • Art Omi International Artists Residency invites thirty artists from around the world every July for a four week residency.
  • Writers Omi at Ledig House sponsors forty writers and translators from around the world for up to two months each year.
  • Music Omi brings together twelve to fifteen musician-composers from around the world in August for three weeks.
  • Dance Omi International Dance Collective brings together ten dancers from around the world for three weeks in late August.
  • NEW Architecture Omi Residency invites ten architects from around the world for a full two-week residency in late February to work on their own project.

SELECTION
Architecture Omi Residents are selected on the basis of their individual proposed project and portfolio. Residents receive individual accommodations and dedicated desk-space within the campus. Completed projects will be presented in an informal critique setting at the end of the residency period, with visitors invited to see the proceedings.

GUEST ARCHITECTURE CRITIC
Each year a distinguished Architecture Critic is invited to visit and meet with the residents during the last weekend of the residency and will lead the final presentations where the public can observe this key aspect in the process of making architecture.

ELIGIBILIY
Application is open to architects from any part of the world that have been professionally active for at least the past five (5) years since professional licensing or obtaining an M. Arch. degree in the U.S. or internationally. Applications will be accepted from early and mid-career architects in active practice or in academia with an architectural design teaching concentration. We do not accept applications from students currently enrolled in any B. Arch, M. Arch, or PhD program. Please note: having a Master’s degree in Architecture and/or an architectural license IS a requirement. Space is very limited and a diverse and international group is sought, consistent with all Omi Residency programs and aligning with the mission of the Architecture Omi program.

PROPOSED PROJECT
Applicants must submit and describe a project they wish to work on, on their own, while at Omi. Projects may be conceptual or practical, and may be an on-going or existing project that requires completion or a new design scheme to be initiated and completed by the end of the residency. Projects may not be client based nor directed. In all instances a visual presentation and a final work product is required. This may be in the form of drawings, maquettes, collages, digital images and the like. Written manuscripts and essays are not to be worked on nor initiated while at Omi. Each resident is expected to bring their own design tools, with some limited printing and up to $50 allowance for materials provided.

SELECTION JURY
All completed applications adhering to the submission requirements will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of professionals. Among the jurors will be practicing architects, architects in academia, and architecture curators.
