Constructing a Real Virtuality

February 4, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm GMT

£15

Join us for a panel discussion on how virtual and augmented reality are transforming architectural design and production, and how we relate to the world.

Over the last decades, the advances in digital technologies have enabled architectures that before were only possible in the imagination. Today, virtual and augmented reality are pushing imaginative possibilities for architecture, often blurring the boundaries between the virtual and the physical, and questioning what is fictional and what is real. Can these virtual tools transform our understanding of reality? What impact would they have on the architectural practice of a virtually-led future?

This talk will cover the different ways in which these new technologies might reconfigure how we relate to the world around us and architectural design and production in the near future. The participants in the Invisible Landscapes: Imagination (Act III) project, opening in the Architecture Studio on 2 February, will discuss their innovative and radical proposals and how they made use of virtual tools to design new spaces and experiences. They will examine the shifts and challenges that virtual reality is raising for our thinking and our understanding of how to navigate reality.

Speakers:

Gilles Retsin Architecture – architecture and design practice whose work investigates new architectural models that engage with the potential of increased computational power and fabrication
ScanLAB Projects – a creative studio co-founded by Matthew Shaw and William Trossell exploring the use of large scale 3D scanning in architecture and the creative industries
Soft Bodies – interdisciplinary design studio established by John Cruwys, David Flook and Paula Strunden, whose work expands the production of space and objects by bringing the physical and virtual worlds closer together

The event will be chaired by Gonzalo Herrero Delicado, Architecture Program Curator at the RA and curator of the Invisible Landscapes series.
