Symposium: Science and the City

October 13, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm EDT

A panel and roundtable discussion with developers, city officials, researchers, architects, and planners about the future of science and research in the city.

Despite boasting one of the world’s largest concentration of best in class research, medical, and science-based institutions and corporations, plus one of the highest concentrations of life science employees in the country, New York City significantly lags behind other US cities in terms of available laboratory space.

However, the footprint of science and research in the city is poised to change over the coming years, with significant investment at the State and City levels, changes to zoning and regulations, and a growing interest on the part of developers and investors. How will we grow science and research in the City and what are the specific challenges to that growth? What are the obstacles faced by developers, research-focused corporations, and institutions? How do they differ? How can we work with the constraints as well as leverage the advantages of building science research space in the City?

“Science and the City” brings together thought leaders in the fields of science and research, including developers and real estate investors focused on building bio- and tech-space, NYC officials for whom growing “lab” space has become a prime motive, leaders at research institutions and universities, game-changing Principal Investigators who have driven the need for more research space and fostered its growth, companies invested in research and start-ups, as well as lab planners and architects.
